CIGNYC’s central mission is to create a camp that truly embodies the spirit of the Equal Protection Clause. The force behind this Clause is Thaddeus Stevens. In his last speech to Congress, he stated (1868), “If members of Congress would fling away ambition and realize that every human being, however lowly-born or degraded by fortune, is your equal and that every inalienable right that belongs to you also belongs to him, truth and righteousness will spread over the land.” The central objective is to make the clause a reality, it has eluded the nation’s children for centuries. Data on youth in American cities shows a sharp disparity refuting Stevens’ ideological concept of true equality for the nation’s children. The interaction between children from different social classes aids social sophistication, making kids understand the importance of mindfulness and collective care.
CIGNYC vision centers on invoking community healing, empathy, and love through universal understanding. The goal of the athletic events, live performances, and theatrical shows is to draw awareness to real circumstances impacting children. The sports curriculum aims to broaden each camper’s world-view by exposing them to a wide variety of athletic experiences they may never have had. These daily activities and challenging hands-on interactive tasks will build each child’s inner strength and resilience.
CIGNYC’s Logo represents challenges communities face domestically as well as globally. Our hummingbird symbolizes hope, empathy transformation, and healing. The distinctive colors around the bird represent various struggles- cancer, mental health, diabetes, homelessness, Parkinson, Alzheimer’s, earth’s rehabilitation, drug and gang violence that shapes the characteristics of the world we all share; the center hummingbird is gold representing success, achievement, and triumph, key elements of the conceptual design of CIGNYC.
